CBDa: Anti-Inflammatory Gold

In just 2 years of legalization, the CBD industry has generated $4.6 billion in sales. But now CBDA, a new kid on the block, is starting to rise in popularity. Both CBDa & CBD molecules are cannabinoids that come from the Cannabis plant.

The cannabis plant contains at least 113 cannabinoids. However, the exact concentration will depend on the type of plant. CBDa (cannabidiolic acid) is the pre-cursor to CBD. In other words, CBDA is the raw, natural form of CBD! Given time, this natural form will eventually convert to CBD by releasing its acid molecule. Decarboxylation occurs when heat is added. CBDa did not garner the initial interest because of the precedence set by THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis that produces a high sensation. It was widely known that the benefits of THC can only be retrieved when the flower is heated.

The same assumption was made with CBDa, thereby, there were more studies made on CBD. CBDa doesn’t bind to cannabinoid receptors the way that CBD does. But it does interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system and boosts serotonin production. CBDa selectively inhibited cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 activity by 50% inhibition concentration. COX-2 inhibitors are a type of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that directly targets cyclooxygenase-2, COX-2, an enzyme responsible for inflammation and pain. Targeting selectivity for COX-2 reduces the risk of peptic ulceration. CBDa is also is absorbed better by the body, increasing its bioavailability so the dosage can start at a lower level. It also has shown to be supportive in preventing cancer as well as supporting cancer therapy by being anti-nausea and anti-vomiting also known as Anti-emetics.
