Full Moon In Pisces: Tension & Ideals
We are having a Full Moon in Pisces on September 1st/2nd, it will appear the fullest on night of the 1st in the Western and Central parts of the world.
The energies of a Full Moon are strongest in the days surrounding it yet its astrological configurations also play a part over the following two weeks. You may start to see its effects slowly build up after the New Moon prior to it. Full Moons are a period in which we feel a push-pull between two opposing signs, in this case being the Moon in Pisces and the Sun in Virgo. It can play out as either a conflict, an integration, or some sort of dynamic playing out between the energies of both signs.
The Moon reflects the expression of feeling and emotion while the Sun reflects the expression of ego and conscious self. We may feel this opposition happening individually within us and/or we can also experience it play out around us with some people (or circumstances) expressing the Pisces side and others expressing the Virgo side. In some cases, Full Moons can also reflect/trigger some sort of change or release. We have been in Virgo season since August 22nd/23rd which will continue until September 22nd/23rd.
The transition into the productive sign of Virgo and out of fun loving Leo is one of the more noticeable changes of astrological seasons. In the Northern Hemisphere this is when we begin to see a more obvious cooling in temperature and we generally start to shift our focus and priorities in comparison to what they were in the previous months. Virgo is an Earth sign ruled by Mercury. It is associated with tasks, duty, service, productivity, practicality, organizing, analyzing, perfection, physical health, cleanliness, sustainability, and purity. It is systematic, detailed, discerning, discriminating, diligent, and efficient. Virgo corresponds with problem solving, adjusting to changing conditions, and coming up with solutions. Negatively, Virgo energy can be cynical, overly critical, fussy, high strung, and too much in the head.
The Full Moon highlights and brings the energies of the opposing sign of Pisces into this Virgo backdrop.
The Moon is also close to Neptune which is associated with Pisces (viewed as a modern ruler) and has the same energies, therefore increasing the same themes. Pisces is a Water sign, although it is linked to Neptune, it is traditionally ruled by Jupiter. It is associated with sensitivity, compassion, empathy, spirituality, creativity, art, inspiration, dreams, imagination, oneness, and idealism. Pisces can be psychic, mystical, healing, and retreating. Negatively, this sign can also be unrealistic, flaky, elusive, delusional, and deceptive. It is associated with escapism and the intoxication of drugs/alcohol. This Full Moon is in a tight sextile with Uranus in Taurus. Having this combined with Mars stationary (mentioned later in article), this can be a good time to experiment with different ways of how we apply ourselves. This aspect to Uranus brings an energy that is unusual, innovative, progressive, metaphysical, original, liberating, rebellious, or independent. Jupiter (close to Pluto and Saturn) is also in the mix, turning the tight configuration between Uranus and the Sun-Moon/Neptune opposition into a ‘Grand Trine Kite’ pattern.
The Sun, Jupiter, and Uranus are in Earth signs while the Moon (with Neptune) is in Water. This overall combination helps to harmonize the opposition of the Full Moon. This is good for combining practicality and tangibility with ideals, visions, creativity, imagination, inspiration, compassion, or spiritual efforts. Mars in Aries is going retrograde in a week following this Full Moon as it is currency nearly stationary. It has entered its pre-retrograde shadow period in late July and has been gradually slowing down since. Currently as it is proceeding its change in motion we can notice its energies more strongly. We can more easily be angry, aggressive, impulsive, competitive, and impatient during this time. Considering that Mars is almost at a stop in a square to Saturn, we may also experience frustrations, obstacles, delays, or limitations that can hinder our actions and the productivity potential of the strong emphasis of planets in Earth signs. Over the next few weeks it can feel like a change of gears in specific areas of our life depending on how this energy corresponds with each of our personal astrological blueprints as laid out in our natal charts. I will be writing a separate article on this retrograde, you can join my mailing list here to ensure that you receive it. Jupiter will be ending its current retrograde on September 12th/13th which began in mid-May. I don’t put much emphasis on the retrogrades of outer planets like Jupiter, however, its energies and themes become more significant during its change in motion and the weeks surrounding it. Generally speaking, it can be connected to Jupiter ruled areas of beliefs, perspectives, philosophies, faith, travel, foreign countries, education, teachers/gurus, exploration, media, marketing, or anything that is expansive. We may also developments in an area of our life that can have a broadening effect. We can begin to have more clarity, experience developments, or see things differently around certain Jupiter themes or expressions that were highlighted sometime from mid-February to mid-May. Venus in Cancer is opposing Saturn in Capricorn very tightly at the time of this Full Moon. This can bring some seriousness, realism, limitations, inhibitions, obstacles, and perhaps some sort of reduction or endings around relationships, social dynamics, finances, value/s, aesthetics, or pleasures. Venus then moves towards a square with a nearly stationary Mars over the following days, tying Saturn into it and forming a t-square between all three planets. This can play out as conflict, competitiveness, or tension in our relations. However, as we approach September 4th, the passionate, and creative potential of this energy can be expressed. Venus will also be in a sextile aspect with Mercury which can be socially stimulating. Mercury in Virgo is also in a trine with Saturn which gets stronger later on September 2nd and into the 3rd. This can be good for thinking in a way that is practical, productive, constructive, orderly, achieving, focused, or tangible. Communications with others, or information we are consuming, may have these themes. How can you incorporate your ideals, originality, imagination, creativity, intuition, spirituality or spiritual modalities into your work, lifestyle, productivity, or tangible efforts? Has anything new, unusual, or unconventional entered your life lately and do you feel the need to explore it more so? Does the amount of attention you give to your inner or spiritual self need to be rebalanced with the amount of attention you give to the mundane and external world? What frustrations have come for you lately and perhaps it is showing you that you need to be doing something differently? These are just some examples of themes that could come up during this period; however, there may be other variations of this energy playing out as well. If you wish to do any sort of intentional release connected to what has come up at this Full Moon, it is best to do so anytime over the two weeks following when it is waning.
