Total Solar Eclipse In Sagittarius: Perception Changes
We are having a Total Solar Eclipse in Sagittarius on December 14th for the majority of the world and in the early hours of the 15th for Eastern Asia and Australia area.
It will be visible from the majority of South America and from a small portion of Africa.
The path of totality will cross over parts of Chile and Argentina which will be the only spots to see the full eclipse. All other areas of visibility will only see partial eclipses depending on their proximity to the eclipse path. A Solar Eclipse is a much more significant type of New Moon which influences a longer term period then a regular one. This is when it occurs near the Lunar Nodes, which is where the path of the Sun and Moon intersect from our perspective on Earth. This happens every six months, along with Full Moon Lunar Eclipses happening prior or following. You can also meet and chat with like minds! Click here to join. Eclipses reflect changes, endings, beginnings, and evolutionary developments which affect the six months following and could also influence up to six weeks, and sometimes months, prior. You may or may not see the effects of it around the time it occurs, but you may feel it and then see it actually play out in the weeks or months afterwards. Two weeks before this one we also had a penumbral Lunar Eclipse in Gemini, and although it wasn’t as significant as this Solar Eclipse, it is still affecting this period and is a part of the astrological backdrop over the coming months. Eclipses are in the same opposing signs generally for 1.5-2 years, in this case Gemini and Sagittarius, which is where the Lunar Nodes are for most of that period. Some of the themes that are playing out could last that long. This series began in spring 2020, when it transitioned out of Cancer-Capricorn, and will last until spring 2022, as it transitions into Taurus-Scorpio. This eclipse will be in the same part of the sky as an eclipse that occurred in December 2001 and it will be part of a series which also links it to another eclipse that occurred in December 2002.
Therefore it is possible that you may see some similar themes or areas of life being affected now as it was from Fall 2001 until Spring 2003. It is also possible that things that occurred or were initiated then may experience its next chapter. Also, in the months leading up to this eclipse, another comet had been discovered which is approaching its closest point in the days leading up to this eclipse. It is possible that it may be visible with the naked eye in some parts of the world during the eclipse period. Astrologically, comets seem to correlate with major complications, fear, the fall of a leader, but can also reflect release from oppression and major innovation. However, the astrological significance of a comet also depends on its level of visibility. Earlier in the year we experienced comet NEOWISE which was the most visible comet we have had in over 20 years.
There are also a few other interesting things to consider connected to the date of this eclipse. Firstly it will be occurring during a meteor shower. Meteor showers aren’t a rare thing as they happen annually multiple times a year, yet having this occur during a Total Solar Eclipse near the Galactic Center, with the potential of a visible comet, adds to the significance of this period as a time of major changes. Another very interesting thing is that December 14th, 2020 is the halfway point between the ‘Great American Eclipse’ (Total Solar Eclipse in Leo) that occurred on August 21st, 2017 and the ‘Great North American Eclipse’ (Total Solar Eclipse In Aries) that will be happening on April 8th, 2024. On a geopolitical level, the 2017 eclipse coincided with President Trump’s first year in office along with all of the division that occurred as a result of his presidency and perpetuation of the media. Now this one is occurring during a likely transition of administrations and we will definitely also see major significant changes happening in the US in 2024.
The shifts reflected by this eclipse are connected to Sagittarian themes and areas of life, ultimately leading to a revision in how its energies are expressed. It is near the Lunar South Node which in many cases could also indicate changes that have a decreasing effect on certain Sagittarius expressions and aspects of life. Again, this process is something that will play out for the following year and a half and began this past May. Sagittarius is associated with travel, foreign lands/countries, exploration, experiences, higher education, teaching, beliefs, philosophies, morals, righteousness, religion, idealism, media, publishing, sales/marketing, and optimism. As a fire sign it is passionate and instinctual. Negatively, Sagittarius can be excessive, blunt, egoic, argumentative, overly opinionated, judgemental, preachy, unrealistic, disregarding of consequences, have a ‘know-it-all’ complex, as well as overlooking of details and facts. Since the Lunar South Node had entered Sagittarius this past spring, its ruler Jupiter has been confined in Capricorn along with its ruler Saturn which is very inhibiting for Jupiter. Over the next year it will be mostly in Aquarius, again with its traditional ruler Saturn, which will also limit Jupiter’s expression while it is in Saturn’s other home sign. However, Jupiter in Aquarius isn’t as limiting as it being in Capricorn, and can be somewhat more freeing in comparison. Perhaps as a result we may see some Sagittarius/Jupiter areas of life be better expressed in 2021 in comparison to 2020. This eclipse is also close to the Galactic Center. This point in the sky symbolically represents higher consciousness and centralized aspects of society. However, considering that this is a South Node eclipse, it can highlight the negative or faulty expressions of these things.
The energy of the Galactic Center can also bring challenges, pressures, destructiveness and chaos in order to change what is outdated. This eclipse is close to Mercury which is also in Sagittarius and in a tight conjunction with the Lunar South Node. This can reflect the need to let go of or decrease something pertaining to Mercury ruled/related areas of life. It could have something to do with communication, certain mental pursuits/expressions/patterns, thought processes, a perception, commuting/transport, commerce, siblings/cousins, neighbors, nervousness, gossip, or some sort of coordination. This can be tied into Sagittarian themes as mentioned above. Considering that Mercury is the ruler of the Lunar North Node in Gemini, issues from the past can also come up to ultimately be resolved or move on from.
The eclipse, and Mercury even more so, are in a trine with Mars which is in Aries, another Fire Sign. Mars is also currently in its post retrograde shadow until early January as it ended its retrograde in mid-November.
The potentials of changes, decrease, or release pertaining to Mercury and Sagittarius themes can support how we are moving forward in regards to how we assert ourselves, individual needs, and/or how we apply our fighting nature, anger, aggression, or sexuality. This combination could reflect a more energetic and active period, however, the eclipse is also in square to Neptune in Pisces. All of this mutable energy (Sagittarius, Pisces) can make things very scattered as well.
The square to Neptune can also bring confusion, lack of clarity, deception, delusion, escapism, or issues around addiction, illness, intoxication, or lack of boundaries. A major astrological event will be happening this month which has long term implications. This is the ‘Great Conjunction’ occurring in Aquarius, which is also referred to as the ‘Grand Conjunction’. This is when Jupiter and Saturn are aligned which is something that occurs every 20 years. It is referred to as ‘Great’ or ‘Grand’ because these are the largest planets with the biggest orbits that are visible with the naked eye.
These qualities reflect how they have a strong long term influence on our society at large when they are in alignment. Whenever there is a conjunction of any planets (or luminaries) it initiates a new cycle and ends a previous one. Similarly as when it is a New Moon, it is ending and beginning a cycle between the Sun and Moon. However, in this case we are not only beginning a new 20 year cycle but it is also initiating a new era in which we will have Jupiter-Saturn cycles almost exclusively in Air signs for nearly 200 years, with the exception of a cycle in Scorpio in 2159.
The cycles of Jupiter and Saturn represent the coming together of structures and beliefs that influence how society functions, builds, and is systemized. In the last 200 year window we have been in an Earth period in which there has been more of a general focus on practicality, physical resources, routine, materialism, realism, regularity, and capitalism throughout society.
The Air period reflects more of a focus on innovation, ideas, intellect, information, freedom, and social aspects of life.
The internet, computing, and digital technology is very much connected to the Air element. We have actually been transitioning into the Air period since the early 80’s when we had the first Grand Conjunction in Air (in Libra) but then the following one was in Earth in the year 2000 (in Taurus).
Therefore the last 40 years have been a transition from one to the other, and a blend of both. Now as we approach the new cycle in Aquarius it will keep recurring in Air for the long haul over the next few centuries as we are currently fading out of the Earth period. This Aquarius cycle will put more of an emphasis on technology, community, equality, science, humanitarianism, progressiveness, along with a blend of rationality and idealism.
There can be pros and cons depending on your personal beliefs and preferences. Socialism and communism are very much Aquarian along with transhumanism, artificial intelligence (AI), and the merging of humans with computing technology. Interestingly, the exact conjunction will be occurring on the December 21st Solstice which is a very symbolic and potent time of the year for transitions. This conjunction will be happening right at the first degree of Aquarius, as Jupiter and Saturn will be entering this sign in the days leading up to it, which is also strongly reflective of new beginnings. Another interesting thing is that this is the closest conjunction of these planets in nearly 800 years which puts another exclamation mark on its significance and the symbolization of entering a new era. Some people believe that we are now officially going into the Age of Aquarius which lasts for 2000 years and is based on a larger precessional cycle.
The exact beginning date of this age is a grey area and is something that is debated amongst astrologers as there can be different markers for the beginning and ending of it. Also, the observation of these 2000 year ages is something that has only been discussed for the last few hundred years in Western Astrology and is apparently absent in older astrological texts.
Therefore this is not acknowledged widely within the astrological community as a whole. Personally, it seems to me that there is some relevance to these 2000 year ages however it is still not totally clear. If these ages are a real thing, regardless of the actual start date, then we are close to the cusp of the Aquarian age. Although the ages have nothing to do with the position of the planets, this Jupiter-Saturn conjunction can be reasonably theoretically seen as a planetary representation of the ushering in of the Aquarian age. But keep in mind this is all theoretical and the transitions from one age to the next lasts hundreds of years regardless. Either way, we are still entering a 20 year Aquarian period and solidifying an approximately 200 year Air period. Keep in mind that Solar Eclipses are different from regular New Moons and they are not necessarily a time to be making intentions. It is best to just try to tune into it, such as in meditation, and/or pay attention to your feelings. Perhaps whatever is coming up for at that time can help you navigate the upcoming months to serve you in your personal evolution.
The themes of the Eclipse will be connected to Sagittarian energies, however, it also depends on how it is interacting with your personal astrology chart based on the day and time of your birth. Here are some suggestions of things that you can be considering at this time and over the following six months. Are any of your beliefs, opinions, judgements, or righteous behavior creating complications for you and/or do they perhaps need to be revisited, revised, or released? Is there something about the way you communicate or think in certain areas of life that need to be changed or let go of? Should you revise your educational focus/pursuits or alter your approach to learning/teaching? Do you see a connection between this period and what was occurring from mid 2001-mid 2003? If so, was there some aspect of your life that became initiated or developed then which is now up for release or revision? What can you do to make your life more compatible with an increasingly digital, computerized, intellectual, technological, internet centered, communal, progressive, and idealistic world? These are just some examples of themes that could come up during this period and over the coming months; however, there may be other variations of this energy playing out as well. The Eclipse will peak and reach totality at 4:13pm Universal Time on December 14th.
The exact moment of the New Moon will be 4:17pm.
