3 Celebrities Are Headed To The Democratic National Convention (But Not To Support Hillary Clinton)

As per usual, this year’s Democratic National Convention (DNC) is a star-studded political event, with several celebrities speaking on behalf of their preferred presidential candidate.

3 Celebrities Are Headed To The Democratic National Convention (But Not To Support Hillary Clinton)

Katy Perry, Eva Longoria, Demi Lovato, Chloë Grace Moretz, Elizabeth Banks, and Lady Gaga are just some of the expected attendees in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from July 25th-28th. Each has already pledged their support for Hillary Clinton via social media, but are using the convention to take their endorsements one step further. But not all celebrities see the convention as an opportunity to publicly support a nominee; some see it as the perfect venue to stand up for something they believe to be more worthwhile. Here are 3 recognizable stars that are attending this year’s DNC with an entirely different agenda: Known for her roles in films such as Sin City and Grindhouse, Rosario Dawson is a widely recognized film and television actress with a clear passion for acting. But her recent actions on social media also suggest that her passion for political justice is equally as strong. As a diehard Bernie Sanders supporter, Rosario is headed to Philadelphia to protest against Hillary Clinton. To date, Rosario has already taken to Twitter against Clinton, especially since the most recent set of emails were released by Wikileaks. In April, Rosario was arrested outside the White House at a protest, and told the New York Times that she would happily get arrested again if it made a positive public impact. As another staunch supporter of Bernie Sanders, Shailene Woodley — American born actress and star of the Divergent film series — is attending this year’s DNC to keep Sanders’ political revolution alive. To do so, she is leading a cross-country caravan, packed with fellow Sanders fans, from Los Angeles to the convention in Philadelphia. Shailene previously pledged her support of Sanders by speaking at one of his rallies in Providence, Rhode Island, in April. Academy Award winning actress Susan Sarandon is quickly establishing herself as one of Hillary Clinton’s toughest Hollywood critics. In a recent interview with The Young Turks (featured below), Susan called Hillary “more dangerous” than Donald Trump, for whom she has also expressed her disdain. Susan has already spoken alongside the aforementioned Shailene Woodley at a Climate Change Rally in Philadelphia, and is expected to continue to make her presence felt throughout the entire DNC. Rather than focusing on the specific political views of each of these 3 individuals, I wish to simply applaud their willingness to stand up in hopes of making a difference. Celebrity voices carry more weight in this world than I might like, but if that must be the case, it is at least refreshing to see them use that power to shed light on issues that actually matter.
