Due to recent advancements in human communication, public discourse about current food production methods has become increasingly informed and vocal, leading to some very serious concerns being brought to the fore.

These valid and understandable worries have shaken the very foundation of the food industry, but corporations are still intent on using their seemingly endless supply of money to remain in control. The only question is, will it work? In response to heightened criticism, the food industry has stepped up its public relation efforts to reassure everyone that our current food system is safe and healthy. One tactic to sway public discourse is to pay third party agencies to produce biased media promoting their agenda. These agencies can confront certain topics head on, on behalf of large industry titans. McDonalds, Coke, and Monsanto have millions of dollars invested in their public perception and would rather not tarnish their image by engaging in the mean-spirited approach many front groups utilize. It is safer to pay someone and let them handle the dirty work. Fake GrassRoots Pretending that they represent the “little guy” appealing to farmers, local business owners, and consumers.

The goal is for them to appear as though they are on your side and they represent you. Buying Science + Media These front groups will pay for research and spokespeople to create content.

They then pay to have this material placed on all forms of media, without disclosing the conflict of interest. Marginalize Discredit critics, often by mocking and name calling, and even with out-right denial.

Their content will attack the opposition without any attempt to address to concerns that are being brought forward. Manipulate Distorting facts to create stories that affect our emotions. This content, otherwise known as propaganda, is used most heavily. Over the years, food and agriculture front groups have proliferated as public awareness grows and new health policies come into place. In the past two months alone, an anti-GMO labeling group – Coalition for Safe Affordable Food – has decided to attack this issue head on. Armed with the power of social media, they intend to control the debate over food safety with their powerful content. But its not working.... Many people are speaking out against this sneaky coalition, who have branded themselves as “safe” while outright denying any potential harmful elements in our current food system. It seems that the coalition efforts will all be in vain; with each post they submit, they are hit with a wave of backlash in the comments section, which is just as visible as the post itself. This encourages everyone who sees it to think consciously for a moment and consider both sides of the situation. Which is why this is uplifting info.
