Forget Coffins – Organic Burial Pods Will Turn Your Loved Ones Into Trees

The most common way to put somebody to rest is the use of a coffin along with a burial in a cemetery. Some people choose to cremate their loved ones, and others chose to simply bury them into the ground without the use of a coffin. Organic burial pods however, will surely capture the attention of many as it’s hard to think of a better way to make the death of a loved on a little more comforting.

The idea comes from designers Anna Citelli and Raoul Bretzel, it’s called the Capsula Mundi project and it’s based out of Italy, and it’s an unbelievable idea. “It’s the first Italian project created to promote the realization of green cemeteries in our country. Capsula Mundi is a container with an old perfect shape, just like an egg, made with modern material -starch plastic- in which the dead body is put in a fetal position. Capsula Mundi is planted like a seed in the soil, and a tree is planted on top of it.

The tree is chosen when the person is alive, relatives and friends look after it when death occurs. A cemetery will no longer be full of tombstones and will become a sacred forest.” (source) The people buried inside of the pod, will nourish the tree(s) that the family chooses for the pod to provide nutrients to. Just imagine entire memorial parks full of trees that eventually turn into a forest – for a cemetery. This is a great alternative to destroying forests and cutting wood for coffins. It would fill the soil of much needed nutrients, and provide even more nutrients for neighboring trees/coffins. It’s a comfortable, natural type of burial, and the fact that our loved ones are resting underneath, and sprouting an entire life form as result of their death is a nice thought. Loved ones could also visit a tree (that has been given life from their loved deceased), care for it, maintain it and rest in its shade. This is such a great idea, what are your thoughts?
