“If Lions Eat Meat, Why Shouldn’t We?”

When it comes to eating animals, we humans have many different reasons that we use to justify these acts.

“If Lions Eat Meat, Why Shouldn’t We?”

So often I hear, ‘it’s natural, it’s what the animals are here for, we have canine teeth that are meant for eating flesh...’ these are all just poor excuses to justify our actions. Eating meat isn’t necessarily wrong, and I’m not here to condemn anyone who does or place blame of judgment, but let’s be real here, and let’s be honest.

The human physiology is not the same as a lion, shark, bear, or any other meat-eating carnivorous animal... it is more closely associated with the primate species, the herbivorous monkeys and gorillas.

The following video takes many of these typical arguments and provides the truth, what we would rather not admit. Check it out. To use the excuse that lions eat meat and that it is just the natural circle of life, is actually not a valid argument. People also sometimes say, that it is justifiable because we are smarter than them. But if you take modern day factory farming out of the equation and you take away our weapons, do you think we could actually take down, kill, rip apart and consume animal flesh? This is not very likely. Let’s see how far those ‘canine’ teeth get you in this sort of situation. In many cultures eating meat has been necessary for survival, particularly in colder climates where nothing is growing, and there is no doubt that it has assisted our survival in many ways. But are we meant to and do we NEED meat to survive and is it justifiable to keep doing it as we are doing it? These are important questions to ask yourself. Turning a blind eye to the injustices of our world will never change anything. If everyone were to get real and honest with themselves, I strongly feel that most people would agree that they would prefer if no animal had to suffer, ever. What sets apart the animals humans are consuming versus the animals that are being consumed in the wild? The animals that are in the wild have a completely free life leading up to their eventual sacrifice, and often it is the old or injured that are hunted and killed.

They do not live a life of misery and depression until their eventual death, their life is completely normal and natural. Humans mass produce animals for the sole purpose of slaughtering them for consumption where the animals are bred just to be killed and eaten. BILLIONS of lives birthed and killed repeatedly over and over again to keep up with our demand for meat, meat and more meat. We certainly do not need to be consuming the amount of meat we are.

The reality is, we do not need to be contributing to these cruel injustices any longer, as the practice of factory farming is inhumane, unethical and quite frankly -barbaric. It’s not that everyone just has to up and give up meat, although many would argue that that is the answer. If people just made the decision to consume much less meat, and eat much more plants (fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, herbs) we could make a massive shift in regards to the way we are treating animals on this planet. Many argue that we need meat, and there is so much conflicting information on this topic that it is difficult to know what is right, but one thing for sure that we do not need is to be consuming meat for every meal and especially not the portions in which we are doing so. We can all do our part to make a difference – for the animals, for the planet and for ourselves. AS Gandhi said, “The greatness of a nation and it’s moral progress can be judged by the way it’s animals are treated.” In many ways we have evolved tremendously, but in this regard we are still so behind. It’s time to step up and be the change we wish to see in the world. Check out the full interview with Gary Yourofsky below.
