Oliver Stone Speech Exposes Modern Politics & Reminds Young People To Look Within (Video)

He has openly expressed his support for Wikileaks and visited Julian Assange at the Ecuadorian Embassy in 2013, appearing in the same year in a video amongst other celebrities offering support for Chelsea Manning. Stone actively shares his perspective on the world through film and is often considered ‘anti-American,’ especially since having created The Putin Interviews, a four-part documentary series featuring interviews he conducted with Vladimir Putin between 2015 and 2017. Critic Marlow Stern of The Daily Beast even claims Oliver intended to “humanize Putin and demonize America.” In a recent speech at the Writers Guild Awards, Oliver makes a point to highlight the discrepancies in today’s government and the role we play as either watchers or participants. He accentuates how flawed the political system is, on every side: In the 13 wars we’ve started over the last 30 years and the 14 billion dollars we’ve spent, and the hundreds of thousands of lives that have perished from this Earth, remember that it wasn’t one leader, but a system, both Republican and Democrat. Call it what you will, the military, industrial, security, money, media complex. It’s a system that has been perpetuated under the guise that these are just wars justifiable in the name of our flag that flies so proudly over our lives. He is well aware of the elite’s power and what they are doing both to our world and to each other: No need to go through the victims, but we know we’ve intervened in more than 100 countries, with invasions, regime change, economic chaos, or hybrid war – soft power – whatever you wanna call it, it’s war of some kind. In the end it’s become a system leading to the death of this planet and the extinction of us all. As mentioned, Oliver has faced a ton of criticism for not only sharing his views on politics but for actively expressing them through film. He gently reminds viewers that “it’s important to remember if you believe in what you’re saying and you can stay the course, you can make a difference.” While being aware of the ongoings in the world is absolutely important to our growth, it’s really what we decide to do with this information that determines whether it positively or negatively affects our lives. It’s so easy to allow ourselves to become overrun with fear and allow our timelines or TVs to be flooded by sensationalism and distraction, but that is not what life is truly about. We are more than what is being displayed to us and we have a duty to ourselves and each other to find what makes our heart sing — because that is what will change the world. I leave you with the same words that Oliver left to close his speech: I urge you to find a way to remain alone with yourself, listen to your silences, not always in a writer’s room. Try to find not what the crowd wants so you can be successful, but try instead to find the true inner meaning of your life here on earth, and never give up on your heart in your struggle for peace, decency, and telling the truth. Thank you xo .
