Russia Considering A Complete Ban On All GM Food Products
Over the past few years the world has seen a tremendous uproar in anti-GMO activity.
Alternative media outlets and activism worldwide have been responsible for bringing to light the truth about GMOs and the fact that there isn’t enough data to consider them completely safe for consumption. In fact, most of the evidence points to the idea that they can be harmful not only to the environment, but to human and animal health as well. There is more than enough evidence available to make it clear that more information is needed, we can no longer blindly accept what is presented to us without questioning and GMOs are a perfect example of what spreading information and activism can do. Things are changing. Russia is considering joining the fast growing list of anti-GMO countries across the world.
They are currently considering a complete ban on GM food products, as well as completely banning its domestic production. A bill was prepared by a group of Russian MPs, and is backed by many, including a group called Russian Sovereignty which consists of united MPs from various parties and parliamentary factions. This comes shortly after a group of Russian scientists called for a 10-year moratorium on GMOs to thoroughly study their influence on human health, emphasizing how vital these examinations are. “It is necessary to ban GMOs, to impose moratorium (on) it for 10 years. While GMOs will be prohibited, we can plan experiments, tests, or maybe even new methods of research could be developed. It has been proven that not only in Russia, but also in many other countries in the world, GMOs are dangerous. Methods of obtaining the GMOs are not perfect, therefore, at this stage, all GMOs are dangerous. Consumption and use of GMOs obtained in such way can lead to tumors, cancers and obesity among animals. Biotechnologies certainly should be developed, but GMOs should b stopped. We should stop it from spreading. ” – Irina Ermakova, VP of Russia’s National Association for Genetic Safety Last September, Russia suspended the import and sale of Monsanto’s genetically modified corn after a French study suggested it may be linked to cancer.
The Prime Minister ordered regulatory agencies to consider a possible ban on all GMO imports into Russia. Russia also endorsed the Rules for the State Registration of GMO and GMO-containing products.
The law enforces compulsory registration of all products containing GM material.
The bill that’s currently being considered will ban the production of genetically modified organisms and transgenic products of plant, animal or microbial origin for their use in human and animal foods.
