Solar Eclipse In Capricorn: Redefining Ambitions & Duties
We are having a partial Solar Eclipse in Capricorn which happens on January 5th in the Americas and on January 6th everywhere else in the world.
This is a supercharged New Moon which influences a longer term period then a regular New Moon. It will be visible from Japan, Korea, most of Mongolia, parts of Central and Eastern China, and Southwestern Alaska. This one marks the beginning of eclipse season which occurs every 6 months when a New Moon and Full Moon occur near the Lunar Nodes, which is where the path of the Sun and Moon meet from our perspective on Earth. Most of the time there are two eclipses, such as in January, however there can also be three in some cases. This one is followed by a Total Lunar Eclipse in Leo on January 20th/21st. Solar Eclipses reflect changes and shifts which affect the 6 months following and could also influence up to 6 weeks prior. You may not actually notice the effects around the time it occurs, but perhaps could feel it, and then see it actually play out in the weeks or months following. The Lunar Nodes recently moved into the Cancer-Capricorn polarity in November and will be there until Spring 2020.
They were in Leo-Aquarius prior to that, since May 2017. However, we had our first Cancer eclipse last summer and will have our last Leo eclipse coming up in a few weeks as this is still the transition period.
The final eclipses in Cancer-Capricorn will occur in the Summer of 2020.
The positions of the Eclipses and the Nodes reflect an evolutionary process in how we work with the energies of these signs. What results from this series of eclipses will have longer-term effects even beyond this period. This Solar Eclipse is on the South Node side of the polarity.
The shifts that could occur, both challenges and developments, are more about changes or what we need to let go of, in relation to the energies of Capricorn to help facilitate a different balance with Cancer. Negative expressions of Capricorn could come up which would ultimately push these changes on us. However, South Node eclipses can also push us to work with its energies in a different and more positive way as well.
The areas of life in which it manifests also depends on how it is interacting with your natal astrology chart/blueprint. Capricorn is the sign of ambition, career, duty, business, achievement, responsibility, discipline, mastery, and governance. It can be conservative, calculated, practical, orderly, realistic, authoritative, controlling, cautious, and worldly. It is a social climber and concerned with status. Capricorn energy can be serious, cold, and unrelenting. This eclipse is occurring close to Saturn and Pluto which are also in the same sign. With Saturn being the ruler of Capricorn, it emphasizes some of the themes mentioned in the previous paragraph. It can also trigger issues connected to boundaries, restrictions, and structures. Pluto’s energies also come into the equation and also amplifies some Capricorn themes. Its energy is powerful, transformative, deep, evolutionary, resourceful, and sexual. It can also be obsessive, controlling, fearful, intense, manipulative, dark, destructive, and jealous. It rules over secrets, hidden matters, desires, the unconscious mind, and the underworld. It can also represent psychoanalysis, shadow selves, purging, death and rebirth. Some of these themes may come up from January 10th-11th or even around January 18th/19th. Both Saturn and Pluto are real and serious energies.
They can really emphasize ending, releasing, and constricting, especially with all of this energy occurring near the South Node in Capricorn. This Eclipse (with Saturn) is also in a harmonious sextile with Neptune which can help to ease some of the hard energy of Saturn and Pluto although its influence is more subtle.
The shifts and developments reflected by this eclipse could play out through harmonizing ideals, spirituality, sensitivity, or compassion with our material goals or duties. Jupiter in Sagittarius is moving towards a square with Neptune. This is one main astrological transits of this year and lasts until early fall. It peaks from January 8th-18th, and is also strong again in mid June and then in mid-late September. At best this energy can be inspiring and compassionate. Expansive pursuits such as learning or travel may be based around beliefs, faith, spirituality, and creativity. This can be great for mystical experiences. However, it is a square which can easily bring the more challenging manifestations of this combination such as being unrealistic, lack of attention to detail, overly idealistic, or perhaps overindulging in escapist or intoxicating behaviour. Uranus is nearly stopped in the sky as it will be ending its retrograde which began in August and going forward again on January 6th. It entered Taurus in May and then returned to Aries where it is currently, and now will be on its way again to Taurus (enters early March) where it will stay until 2026. During the weeks around when it changes motion, like it is currently, Uranus themes can come up strongly.
There can be some surprises, liberating actions, or beginning to move forward in an innovative way. It can also manifest as shake ups, disruptions, separation, or rebellion. Globally, sometimes natural or man made disasters could occur when Uranus is highlighted. Mercury recently entered Capricorn while in a square with Mars newly in Aries. Our communications and minds can be very energetic, productive, yet impulsive. We can move around a lot handling errands. However, conflicts, arguments, impatience, and competitiveness can also occur more easily. Ideas can be challenged and spoken word can be aggressive. This peaks January 7th-8th. Venus is in a quincunx with Uranus which is strongest during this eclipse. Any of the Uranus energies (mentioned two paragraphs above) that manifest could have a challenging effect on relationships, money, aesthetics, or pleasures. Some adjustments may be required due to changes that come up. Venus is also in a trine with Chiron which can have a healing effect on relations or values, or perhaps people coming together that wouldn’t normally so. What do you to need change when it comes to how you handle your duties, ambitions, or career? Have you been too limiting, serious, overworked, cautious, or calculated at the expense of emotional fulfillment or having a more joyous life? What attitudes, behaviors, obsessions, or types of actions do you need to change, transform, or purge so that you can truly expand? What aspects of your life do you need to be more realistic about? These are just some examples of what to consider during this time. However, keep in mind that the energies of this eclipse will be a part of the backdrop over the next 6 months and some of the themes connected to this eclipse may not be as apparent yet. If you wish to make any intentions, it is generally best to do so within the first 24 hours following the New Moon/Solar Eclipse.
The exact/peak time of it will be at 1:28am Universal Time on January 6th which is January 5th in the Americas. Click here to see what that is in your time zone..
