Why Do We Love & Hate Diamonds? What To Avoid & Why

m. But what many people don’t know is that there are different types of diamonds and that many of them aren’t as harmful to nature as you might think.

The reason for this is that most diamonds are actually synthetic diamonds – that is, diamonds which are grown in a laboratory! Choosing whether to buy a natural diamond, synthetic diamond, or any diamond at all can be a tough call. But really, when you are trying to make that decision, just ask yourself three questions: If you were to ask me for my personal opinion, I would tell you that my girlfriend and I are not particularly concerned with how a diamond is made, but rather where it comes from. What matters to me is ensuring that I buy diamonds that don’t contribute to wars. With that in mind, when it comes time for me to buy an engagement ring, I’ll definitely consider choosing synthetic. Dreammodels has made an infographic where you can compare the different types of diamonds and as you can see, China produces more than 100 times as many synthetic diamonds as Russia produces natural diamonds (Russia is the biggest producer of natural diamonds in the world). Considering the enormous production levels of synthetic diamonds, you might think that such diamonds are much cheaper than their natural counterpoints. Unfortunately that’s not the case. White diamonds, the most commonly colored variety of these gems, costs more or less the same whether they are synthetically or naturally derived. If you want to save money by buying synthetic diamonds, you need to go for the colored diamonds – especially blue and pink, which are a lot cheaper when produced this way. If money is an issue, you might also want to consider diamond substitutes like cubic zirconia and moissanite. Both of these stones look very much like real diamonds, but they aren’t carbon based like real diamonds (cubic zirconia is zirconium dioxide and moissanite is silicon carbide). If you compare the price per carat for diamond substitutes, you will see that they cost around $20/carat for cubic zirconia and around $250/carat for moissanite (while real diamonds cost around $5000/carat or more). Most people can’t see the difference between cubic zirconia, moissanite, and real diamonds, so you might actually wonder why it should be necessary to buy real diamonds at all. Especially when you consider that engagement rings very well may be a scam! .
