Food as medicine: What’s your favourite resource?

“Food as medicine” is a concept that emphasises the role of diet and nutrition in promoting health, preventing disease and supporting medical treatment. Embracing food as medicine involves making informed dietary choices.

The concept is not new; Hippocrates is attributed with saying, “Let food be thy medicine.” But with the advent of a global pharmaceutical industry dominating healthcare worldwide, we are losing the knowledge our ancestors had and are forgetting food’s vital role in our health.

Natural News recently published an article about Dr. Bernard Jensen’s 1998 book ‘Foods That Heal’ in which he uses the teachings of Hippocrates and VG Rocine, as well as his own research and theories, to offer compelling evidence that what we ingest has a profound effect on our health and well-being. Which reminded me of when my amateur journey in researching food as medicine began.

In 1996, the Reader’s Digest Association published a book titled ‘Foods That Harm; Foods That Heal’.  It has been updated since then, and several versions have been subsequently published.  A copy of the 2010 edition can be read online HERE and the 2018 edition HERE.

The book provides an A-Z guide to safe and healthy eating, addressing questions about the health benefits and hazards of different foods. It is designed to be a reference tool for those interested in safe and healthy eating, with sections dedicated to health conditions and the role of food in their prevention and treatment.  The 2004 edition boasts that it provides information on over 92 ailments and 142 food items, allowing readers to look up any food and discover its benefits, potential healing properties or harmful effects.

It covers topics such as which foods can fight cancer, free you from pain, slow the ageing process, sharpen your mind and help you sleep. It also discusses the health benefits of foods like coffee, chocolate, nuts and shrimp, as well as the hazards of fruit juice, grilled foods, energy bars and fast-food salads.

I was the proud owner of a hard copy of the first edition published in 1996, written by Joe Schwarcz, Alasdair McWhirter and Liz Clasen.  Sadly, through several house moves over the years, my copy has been lost.  It was the first book that I purchased when my interest in the medicinal benefits of food was first awakened and, as you can imagine, its pages were well-thumbed.  Because my copy of the book represents my first love, so to speak, I miss it dearly.  It is with a touch of nostalgia that I hope whoever found my book loves it as much as I did.
