Here’s Why Chipotle Took Pork Off Their Menu – We Need More Restaurants Like This
Chipotle restaurants have seen huge success over the past few years and many agree that this is directly linked to the sustainable and ethically sourced animal and vegetable products that are used in their popular menu items. In fact, the Chipotle website clearly states: “Food with integrity is our commitment to finding the very best ingredients raised with respect for the animals, the environment and the farmers.” Try comparing that statement to other popular fast food chains like McDonald’s or Wendy’s... This amazing chain of fast food restaurants has even made a huge stride in removing GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms) from its menu.
There are still a few items on the menu that are GM, but they clearly label this on their website menu, so you can be completely sure what you are ordering up and make a smart decision for yourself and your family.
They also use many certified organic ingredients. Another plus. Recently over 600 Chipotle restaurants across North America have removed the popular item “Pork Carnitas” from their menus.
They did so because the pork that they were receiving wasn’t up to par with their animal ethics philosophy. From The Guardian: “Chipotle stopped selling pork at about a third of its outlets this week after concluding that part of its supply chain had failed to meet its progressive animal husbandry standards.
The chain promises diners that is only serves pork from pigs raised “outside or in deeply bedded pens” that are “never given antibiotics and are fed a vegetarian diet.” A routine audit of a major supplier on Friday (January 9th, 2015) uncovered violations, a restaurant spokesman told the Associated Press.” If you are wondering why Chipotle cares so much about how the pork that is used is raised and sourced you can read more about the hazards of consuming conventionally raised pork for yourself and the environment here. This is a bold move for Chipotle and has probably done nothing, but gain even more respect from its happy, informed consumers. Even though this move has probably ended up costing them a pretty penny, Chipotle can maintain a high level of respect from its informed and loyal customers. Chipotle is working to help its pork suppliers get back up to code. In the meantime, they have been pushing another popular menu item, “Sofritas.” Meat eaters and Vegetarians alike can agree that these are delicious and made from organic tofu. Which means the soy has not been genetically modified. Chipotle is setting a great example for other fast food chains in the nation, but one has to wonder, will those other chains ever follow suit? If you would like to see more companies adopting some of Chipotle’s amazing standards there are a few things you can do: We can all do our part to make a difference in this world. Way to go Chipotle for another amazing decision. Much Love .
